With over 20 years experience in the events industry, Alex has amassed a vast range of knowledge and skills across all aspects of technical production and project management, delivering events of all shapes, sizes and budgets across the corporate, B2B and brand activation sectors.
Over the years Alex has worked on many key events across both Europe and the UK for prestigious clients including Facebook, Bloomberg, Virgin Media and Jaguar. He has also been instrumental in designing and opening a vast venue portfolio, including Printworks London.
As I got more involved in the technical side of things, I became more and more interested in the equipment and how it worked. This eventually led to me starting my own technical production company.
So, you’ve got 30 years of industry experience; how did you start out?
I developed a passion for the entertainment industry when I joined my school’s lighting team at the age of 12. I was lucky to have the chance to gain work experience at York Opera House and began working there regularly at the age of 16. Since then, I have been working in production and have continued to pursue my passion for the industry.
If you had to give some advice to someone who is looking to get started in the industry, what would it be?
My advice would be to act like a sponge and absorb everything. Never stop learning and gain as much experience as possible. Volunteer for everything and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Remember, no question is a silly question. In the early days, I worked for free at the local theatre to gain experience and knowledge so I think something like that is a great way to get your foot in the door.
What do you most enjoy about managing a team?
For me, it’s supporting individuals to deliver great results and grow within their roles, thus progressing their careers.
Would you say you have an ethos?
Be as dependable as a coffee machine on a Monday morning – always ready to deliver!
